âHELL NO.â I looked at LD. âNo way. I donât trust him, I donât like him, and I donât trust him.â
âYou said that already,â LD said.
âThatâs how much I donât trust him.â
âWe need to speak to the Abbot,â LD answered after a moment. âMaybe thereâs another way.â
âThere isnât,â William said, waving us to the exit. âBut feel free to consult.â
A monk approached us from the entrance to the meditation hall. He bowed after giving William a sad look. We returned the bow and the monk spoke.
âKhen Rinpoche will see you now,â the monk said. âPlease, follow me.â
âIâd really just like to punch him in the face,â I said as we walked away from a smug-looking William. âHeâs like the worst version of Monty.â
âHeâs also a few shifts away from being an Archmage,â LD said. âKeep that in mind when you unleash your haymaker.â
As the monk led us out of the meditation hall, we crossed several small stone bridges nestled among lush green fields. We followed a path until we arrived at a large lake. Zhuchi stood next to the lake, looking off into the distance. The monk bowed and left us.
âI see youâve met the one who needs your help,â Zhuchi said. âHe carries a deep anger insideââhe glanced at LDââjust like you.â
âIâd rather not help him,â I said. âHe seems like an asshâ âI remembered who was I speaking to and course correctedââa total jerk who will betray us the first chance he gets.â
âItâs possible,â Zhuchi said with a small smile as he gazed into the lake. âItâs also possible helping him will help you deal with the difficult choices ahead.â
More Yat-ese. At least he didnât carry a staff.
âWhat choices?â I asked. âWould it be possible to just get a straight answer for once?â
âEvery answer you have been given has been at the level of your comprehension,â Zhuchi replied, turning to us. âYou must deal with your bonds, and youââhe pointed to LDââmust deal with your anger.â
âIâm not angry,â LD said, quietly looking down at the surface of the lake. âMy fury fuels me for what I know must be done.â
âWhat must be done?â I asked. âI didnât get the memo. Why is fury involved in this potentially fatal-sounding plan?â
âYou must join the Hearts,â Zhuchi said. âThis much I have seen.â
âI thought we didnât want to join the Hearts?â I looked at LD. âWhy are we joining the Hearts?â
âIf theyâre joined, William will be untethered and in possession of the Gray Heart,â LD answered. âWe canât trust him. Heâs the reason Niall is on a rampage.â
âAnd yet,â Zhuchi said, turning back to the lake, âyou cannot do this without him. You are welcome to leave him and the Heart here and return to your plane.â
âNo,â I said quietly. âWe need the Heart to get Monty away from Gabrielle.â
âIf you give her William, sheâll have him and the White Heart,â LD said. âTristan may have an opinion about that.â
âThen you must choose the greater good over the lesser evil,â Zhuchi answered.
