EIGHTEEN

“HELL NO.” I looked at LD. “No way. I don’t trust him, I don’t like him, and I don’t trust him.”

“You said that already,” LD said.

“That’s how much I don’t trust him.”

“We need to speak to the Abbot,” LD answered after a moment. “Maybe there’s another way.”

“There isn’t,” William said, waving us to the exit. “But feel free to consult.”

A monk approached us from the entrance to the meditation hall. He bowed after giving William a sad look. We returned the bow and the monk spoke.

“Khen Rinpoche will see you now,” the monk said. “Please, follow me.”

“I’d really just like to punch him in the face,” I said as we walked away from a smug-looking William. “He’s like the worst version of Monty.”

“He’s also a few shifts away from being an Archmage,” LD said. “Keep that in mind when you unleash your haymaker.”

As the monk led us out of the meditation hall, we crossed several small stone bridges nestled among lush green fields. We followed a path until we arrived at a large lake. Zhuchi stood next to the lake, looking off into the distance. The monk bowed and left us.

“I see you’ve met the one who needs your help,” Zhuchi said. “He carries a deep anger inside”—he glanced at LD—“just like you.”

“I’d rather not help him,” I said. “He seems like an assh” —I remembered who was I speaking to and course corrected—“a total jerk who will betray us the first chance he gets.”

“It’s possible,” Zhuchi said with a small smile as he gazed into the lake. “It’s also possible helping him will help you deal with the difficult choices ahead.”

More Yat-ese. At least he didn’t carry a staff.

“What choices?” I asked. “Would it be possible to just get a straight answer for once?”

“Every answer you have been given has been at the level of your comprehension,” Zhuchi replied, turning to us. “You must deal with your bonds, and you”—he pointed to LD—“must deal with your anger.”

“I’m not angry,” LD said, quietly looking down at the surface of the lake. “My fury fuels me for what I know must be done.”

“What must be done?” I asked. “I didn’t get the memo. Why is fury involved in this potentially fatal-sounding plan?”

“You must join the Hearts,” Zhuchi said. “This much I have seen.”

“I thought we didn’t want to join the Hearts?” I looked at LD. “Why are we joining the Hearts?”

“If they’re joined, William will be untethered and in possession of the Gray Heart,” LD answered. “We can’t trust him. He’s the reason Niall is on a rampage.”

“And yet,” Zhuchi said, turning back to the lake, “you cannot do this without him. You are welcome to leave him and the Heart here and return to your plane.”

“No,” I said quietly. “We need the Heart to get Monty away from Gabrielle.”

“If you give her William, she’ll have him and the White Heart,” LD said. “Tristan may have an opinion about that.”

“Then you must choose the greater good over the lesser evil,” Zhuchi answered.
